Whining isn’t Sexy: Rage about Nerd Rage

Whining isn’t Sexy: Rage about Nerd Rage

So, in response to reading this Buzzfeed piece about how comics pro Tony Harris hates female cosplayers — only some of them, though, which we’ll get to in a moment — I tweeted Pro tip: geeks of all genders who are confident in their geekery and their sexuality get laid more often. Confidence is sexy. Whining isn’t. That tweet has since been retweeted over a hundred times. It’s been favourited 20-something times. I consider that license to write a longer…

Another reason I’m happy to live in Canada:

Another reason I’m happy to live in Canada:

Today, Ontario’s top court legalized brothels, with the intent to protect sex workers. Snip: All five judges said the law prohibiting the operation of bawdy houses “is grossly disproportionate” to its stated aim of avoiding disorder and maintaining public health standards. “The record is clear that the safest way to sell sex is for a prostitute to work indoors, in a location under her control,” they said. The court emphasized that prostitutes are forced to break the law if they…

And now a word from Ursula K. LeGuin re: abortion

And now a word from Ursula K. LeGuin re: abortion

“What was it like, in the Dark Ages when abortion was a crime, for the girl whose dad couldn’t borrow cash, as my dad could? What was it like for the girl who couldn’t even tell her dad, because he would go crazy with shame and rage? Who couldn’t tell her mother? Who had to go alone to that filthy room and put herself body and soul into the hands of a professional criminal?–because that is what every doctor who…

If you see something, say something.

If you see something, say something.

I posted this comment following John Scalzi’s thunderous post regarding Penn State head football coach Joe Paterno’s culpability in the continued rape of pre-adolescent boys by Jerry Sandusky, a member of the Penn State football coaching staff. In the thread that followed, someone asked how Mike McQueary, the graduate student that observed the rape-in-progress and reported it to Paterno, should have interrupted it. After all, mightn’t Sandusky have retaliated, and hurt the child further? Personally, I find that prospect doubtful….

A story about why we need harassment policies

A story about why we need harassment policies

I was at dinner with some friends on Tuesday night, discussing the sad sack of fail who ruined many a party at the 2011 World Fantasy Convention in San Diego by getting drunk and sexually harassing some of the women in attendance. Some of the women I was eating with said it wasn’t that bad, and that when a man harasses you, you’re just supposed to twist his thumb or take his hand away or yell at him loudly enough…

I went to prom with another girl.

I went to prom with another girl.

You might not know this about me, but I went to prom with another girl. She wasn’t my girlfriend. We weren’t dating. I just wanted someone to go with me, and due to pure social fuckery and indecisive bullshit on my part, none of the males in my romantic life were really available (nor was I available for them).* She agreed to go after I blurted out an invite, and we actually had a good time. We ate a nice…

Samuel R. Delany on slash fic:

Still, the “K/S” material confirmed something that I already knew from my own life: that there are just as many heterosexual women who are turned on by the idea of men having sex with one another as there are heterosexual men who are turned on by the idea of women having sex with one another — that the engines of desire are far more complex than we usually give them credit for; and that if lesbians and gay men didn’t…

Quotable quotes:

Quotable quotes:

Today, I thought that I would share this article on the death of rave culture and how Frederic Jameson predicted it, originally posted by Bruce Sterling. But then at Scalzi’s I saw, this, er, piece on why human penises look the way they do. Which led to this particular money shot: Hopefully you’re thinking as an evolutionary psychologist at this point and can infer what these survey data mean: by using their penises proficiently as a semen displacement device, men are…
